Chemistry 101 – a Date with Sofia
Short Story: All About Sofia | Chapter 1
The first year of my University Science course had come and gone, I had done pretty well. It was the first week and it was the first practical session. I entered the teaching lab put my things on a bench and settled for the session to start. Other students filed in and took seats. This was in a new stream for me, I recognised a few people, but no friends, and the seat next to me remained empty as the class began.
As the Lab teacher began explaining what was the focus of today’s session, the lab door opened, carefully and someone poked their head around the door to check on the room. She meekly looked toward the front, apologised for being late and surveyed the room for a place to sit. Her eyes found their way to the vacant chair beside me.
As she moved in my direction I chanced to take in a fuller view. She was tall, slender, with blond shoulder length hair that curled around and somewhat hide the contours of her face. She wore a T Shirt, a short-ish skirt and black stockings that reinforced the length of her legs. Her complexion was fair and facial features were refined and elegant. Our eyes met ever so briefly and we exchanged a courteous smile. She moved past me and took her seat.

As she settled into the seat, the class went on. A practical experiment was being outlined. It soon became apparent that we were about to become lab partners.
The Lab Techs began handing out the equipment and supplies needed for the experiment. When they came to our bench, I turned to my new lab partner and introduced myself. She smiled, ‘I’m Sofia’ her cheeks slightly reddening as she spoke and briefly engaged eye contact, but then darted away.
We both took some time to read through the experiment procedure and eventually began work. We divided the tasks and everything progressed smoothly. At first I made several probably awkward attempts to find a conversation with Sofia. Was she shy? or maybe she didn’t like me? The first 20 minutes or so continued to be socially awkward, but I couldn’t help to begin to admire the way she worked. Fast, direct, organised, a little inspiring tbh.
Eventually we came to section of the practical where we needed to wait for the next step. This gave us an opportunity to talk a little bit more. By some coincidence it turned out that we were both reading the same book and this proved to be a mutual interest in works by the author. I noticed a clear change in rapport between us and as we resumed work there was an evident change in Sofia’s demeanor.
Although we conversed and we were getting on really well there was a distinct shyness about her that made her hide her looks and avert her eyes when I looked at her. Not in an uninterested way, it seemed more like a repression of emotion, or was it attraction? or just a recognition of a connection gathering between us. I felt it, the slight electric pulse whenever our eyes met, the slight feeling of intimacy as our bodies lightly brushed when we lent in to undertake a procedure, the soft touch of her hand on my forearm while we worked.
At one point, a pair of tongs fell on the floor and Sofia bent down to pick them up. My gentlemanly instincts tried to tell me not to perv, but other naughtier ones led my eyes to check out her long and slender legs and very fine ass. I looked away just in time so as not to seem to be caught leering at her. Oh, did she catch me? was that a little smirk? a flush of her cheeks?
We were getting on really well, the work was coming along brilliantly, we were a good team. There seemed to be some connection between us. But the session was nearly over, my mind began to shift to the next question. Should I ask her out? did she have already have a boyfriend? maybe she wasn’t interested….
I steeled myself, drew a sharp breath, caught her attention with eye contact, and I could feel the reverberation in my voice, ‘Hey Sofia would you like to go out sometime?
The moment to her response seemed to hang in time, but she smiled, her face blushed slightly, consideration was evident across her face. Her voice came out a little meeker than previously ‘Ahh, yeah that would be nice….’ She averted her eyes cutely.
I felt a warming and tingly sensation and had to check myself not to sound too excited. Ok maybe I can get your number? I pulled my phone from my pocket and opened the contacts to enter her number. She reached over, brushing my hands with hers and entered her number for me. She glanced at me as she returned it to me, her hands brushed mine again but further along my forearm. The chemistry was real.
